Photography

Photography is one of those things that I’ve always admired, but have never taken up myself until just recently. Upon discovering the pure joy of a digital SLR camera after using a compact digital camera for so long, I began snapping photos at local parks and around the neighborhood. My primary camera (pictured below) is a Canon EOS Digital Rebel with an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. My compact digital camera (not pictured) is a Casio Exilim EX-S600.

There are several differences between SLR (single-lens-reflex) cameras and compact digital cameras:

  • The large lenses on SLR cameras are generally removable, which allows professional photographers to carry different lenses for different uses.
  • SLR cameras contain a small mirror inside the body of the camera, which reflects the image passing through the lens directly to the viewfinder, allowing the photographer to see the exact image which will be captured by the image sensor. In a compact digital camera, on the other hand, the viewfinder is simply a hole through the camera’s body, and this image is generally not an accurate representation of what the image sensor will capture.
  • The image sensor in digital SLR cameras is physically larger than that in compact digital cameras, providing less noise and better sensitivity.
